A monthly movie series featuring newer releases of all kinds!
This month, we’re playing: Sirāt (R)
Directed by Óliver Laxe, written by Laxe and Santiago Fillol, and starring Sergi López, this Spanish thriller/adventure film had its world premiere in the main competition of the 78th Cannes Film Festival in May 2025.
Sirāt received widespread international acclaim, taking home a nomination for the Cannes’ Palme d’Or and a win for the Jury Prize; winning the top grand prize, the Gold Hugo, at the Chicago International Film Festival; being nominated for Best Film Not in the English Language at the BAFTA Awards; and earning nominations for Best International Feature Film/Best Non-English Language Motion Picture and Best Sound/Best Original Score at the Academy Awards and Golden Globes, respectively.
“Sirāt” means “way” or “path” in Arabic, but also refers to a bridge that connects Hell and paradise in Islamic theology. In this road drama, Luis (López), along with his son Esteban, travels to a massive rave held deep in the deserts of southern Morocco in search of his missing daughter, Mar. When armed authorities break up the gathering amid a World War III-like event, Luis and Esteban team up with a small group of nomadic ravers, heading further south into the unforgiving Sahara desert for one final party. They share food and fuel, cross a river together in their vans, and navigate multiple tragic events. Sirāt redefines the traditional road-trip narratives into an open-ended physical and spiritual quest.
